Gawler rail line closures

When: From Monday 12 October 2020

A range of closures are taking place across the Gawler rail line for works on the Gawler Rail Electrification project including temporary partial and full line closures into late 2021.

These closures range from partial service closures to full line closures, as well as late night or ongoing closures - with substitute buses in place.

Monday 12 October to Christmas Day 25 December 2020

Location: The Gawler line will be closed between Adelaide Railway Station and Salisbury Interchange.

When: From first service, Monday 12 October to last service, (Christmas Day) Friday 25 December 2020.

Passenger services: Train services will operate between Salisbury Interchange and Gawler Central station. Substitute buses will be in place to transport passengers between Salisbury Interchange and Adelaide Railway Station.

Substitute Buses

Route and bus stops

  • The GA1 Substitute Bus service will operate as closely as possible to the train timetable for the duration of the closure, servicing each station’s substitute bus stop.
  • The GA2 will run express from Salisbury Interchange to Mawson Interchange, and then express to the city.
  • The GA3 will run express from Salisbury Interchange directly to the city.

The substitute bus stops will be positioned as close to the Gawler line railway stations as practicable. These stations and stops are outlined in the timetables below.

Mobility aids and substitute buses

Customers with a large mobility devices that do not fit on Adelaide Metro buses are to contact the Torrens Transit Mile End the depot on 8292 8113 to request an accessible taxi. This service is available from train station to train station only and not a door-to-door service.

Wheelchair Passengers

All timetabled bus substitute services are accessible for all customers, including the elderly, customers with a disability and those travelling with prams.

Bicycle Passengers

Bicycles are not permitted on bus substitute services.

 

Future closures into late 2021

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project is reaching a new milestone, with works now entering a more complex stage of delivery.

Temporary partial and full closures of the Gawler rail line are required between October 2020 and October 2021 to facilitate works for the project that cannot be safely undertaken with trains operating in the corridor.

Summary of future closures:

  • Boxing Day 26 December 2020 to Monday 25 January 2021, inclusive (approx 1 month)
    Full line closure, closed Adelaide Railway Station to Gawler Central Railway Station
  • Australia Day 26 January 2021 to Friday 9 April 2021, inclusive (approx. 2.5 months)
    Partial closure between Mawson Interchange and Gawler Central Station
  • (April school holidays) From Saturday 10 April 2021 to Saturday 24 April 2021, inclusive (approx. 2 weeks)
    Full line closure, closed Adelaide Railway Station to Gawler Central Railway Station
  • Sunday 25 April 2021 to Friday 2 July 2021, inclusive (approx. 2.5 months)
    Partial closure between Mawson Interchange and Gawler Central Station
  • (July school holidays) Saturday 3 July 2021 to Sunday 18 July 2021, inclusive (approx. 2 weeks)
    Full line closure, closed Adelaide Railway Station to Gawler Central Railway Station
  • Monday 19 July 2021 to Friday 24 September 2021, inclusive (approx. 2.5 months)
    Partial closure between Salisbury Interchange and Gawler Central Station
  • (September school holidays) Saturday 25 September 2021 to Sunday 10 October 2021, inclusive (approx. 2 weeks)
    Full line closure, closed Adelaide Railway Station to Gawler Central Railway Station

The above is a summary, and further information will be provided once available.

During the partial closures, trains will continue to operate on the part of the line that hasn’t been affected, with substitute buses operating along the closed section of track.

The full line closures will result in all services on the Gawler rail line being cancelled, substitute buses will operate between Adelaide Railway Station and Gawler Central Railway Station during these times.

Substitute buses will operate as closely as possible to existing train timetables throughout these closure periods.
