Gawler rail line closures

When: From Monday 12 October 2020

Affecting: GAW, GAWC, SALIS

A range of closures are taking place across the Gawler rail line for works on the Gawler Rail Electrification project including temporary partial and full line closures into late 2021.

These closures range from partial service closures to full line closures, as well as late night or ongoing closures - with substitute buses in place.

Check back often, as this page will be updated with upcoming closures as the information becomes available.

Below you will find information on:

Saturday 26 December 2020 (Boxing Day) to Sunday 25 April 2021 (end of School Holidays)

Location: The entire Gawler line will be closed between Adelaide and Gawler Central.

When: From first service Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day) to last service Sunday 25 April 2021 inclusive (end of School Holidays).

Passenger services: Train Substitute bus services will be in place, as no train services will be operating.

Substitute Buses

Adelaide Metro will always attempt to provide a frequency of service as outlined in the timetables, however traffic conditions, roadworks, and accidents cause delays in the frequency of services.

Route and bus stops

  • The GA1 All Stop Service will operate from Gawler Central to Adelaide, servicing all substitute bus stops except Gawler Oval.
  • The GA2 Limited Stop Service will operate to limited stops between Gawler Central, Gawler, Smithfield, Elizabeth, Salisbury, Mawson Lakes and Adelaide.
  • The GA3 Express Service will run express from Smithfield to Elizabeth, then to Adelaide.
  • The GA4 Peak Express Service will run express from Gawler to Adelaide, during the weekday AM and PM peak travel periods.

Please note the Gawler Oval and North Adelaide railway stations will not be serviced by substitute buses.

It's recommended that passengers consider multiple bus services for their travel. For example, a passenger from Tambelin heading to Adelaide, should consider catching the GA1 to Smithfield, then the GA3 to Adelaide.

The substitute bus stops are positioned as close to the Gawler line railway stations as practicable. Download a map of the substitute bus stop locations and services available at each location here.

Weekend Timetables (including Public Holidays)

Weekday Timetables (Effective from 4 January 2021)

Wheelchair, mobility aid and pram passengers

Every effort is made so that all timetabled bus substitute services are accessible for all customers, including the elderly, customers with a disability and those travelling with prams.

If customers find their large mobility device does not fit on an Adelaide Metro bus, it is recommended they contact the Torrens Transit Mile End depot on 8292 8113 to request an accessible taxi. This service is available from train station to train station only and not a door-to-door service.

Bicycle Passengers

Bicycles are not permitted on bus substitute services.

Future closures into late 2021

The Gawler Rail Electrification Project is reaching a new milestone, with works now entering a more complex stage of delivery.

Temporary partial and full closures of the Gawler rail line are required between October 2020 and late 2021 to facilitate works for the project that cannot be safely undertaken with trains operating in the corridor.

Summary of future closures:

  • Monday 26 April 2021 to Friday 2 July 2021, inclusive (approx. 2.5 months)
Partial closure between Mawson Interchange and Gawler Central Station
  • (July school holidays) Saturday 3 July 2021 to Sunday 18 July 2021, inclusive (approx. 2 weeks)
Full line closure, closed Adelaide Railway Station to Gawler Central Railway Station
  • Monday 19 July 2021 to Friday 24 September 2021, inclusive (approx. 2.5 months)
Partial closure between Salisbury Interchange and Gawler Central Station
  • (September school holidays) Saturday 25 September 2021 to Sunday 10 October 2021, inclusive (approx. 2 weeks)
Full line closure, closed Adelaide Railway Station to Gawler Central Railway Station

The above is a summary, and further information will be provided once available.

During the partial closures, trains will continue to operate on the part of the line that hasn’t been affected, with substitute buses operating along the closed section of track.

The full line closures will result in all services on the Gawler rail line being cancelled, substitute buses will operate between Adelaide Railway Station and Gawler Central Railway Station during these times.

Substitute buses will operate as closely as possible to existing train timetables throughout these closure periods.
