Gawler rail line closures
When: From Thursday 1 April 2021
To ensure works are progressed as quickly and safely as possible, and to provide the best opportunity for construction on the Gawler Rail Electrification Project (GREP) to be completed by the end of this year, the State Government has announced an extended temporary closure of the Gawler Rail Line.
Below you will find information on:
Section of rail line: The full Gawler rail line will be closed.
When: The current temporary full line closure will continue until November 2021.
Passenger services: Substitute bus services will be in place, as no train services will be operating. From late April further substitute buses will also be added to timetables to increase services.
Special events: The closure will remain in place during AFL matches and other major events. Additional substitute buses may be used during these events.
Adelaide Metro will always attempt to provide a frequency of service as outlined in the timetables, however traffic conditions, roadworks, and accidents cause delays in the frequency of services.
- The GA1 All Stop Service will operate from Gawler Central to Adelaide, servicing all substitute bus stops except Gawler Oval.
- The GA2 Limited Stop Service will operate to limited stops, being Gawler Central, Gawler, Smithfield, Elizabeth, Salisbury, Mawson Lakes and Adelaide.
- The GA3 Express Service will run express from Smithfield to Elizabeth, then to Adelaide.
- The GA4 Peak Express Service will run express from Gawler to Adelaide, during the weekday AM and PM peak travel periods.
Please note the Gawler Oval and North Adelaide railway stations will not be serviced by substitute buses.
It's recommended that passengers consider multiple bus services for their travel. For example, a passenger from Tambelin heading to Adelaide, should consider catching the GA1 to Smithfield, then the GA3 to Adelaide.
The substitute bus stops are positioned as close to the Gawler line railway stations as practicable. Download a map of the substitute bus stop locations (PDF 1.6MB) which displays the services available at each location.
On the morning of ANZAC Day, 25 April 2021, GA1 and GA2 buses from the City will detour due to road closures, until 1pm. Further details can be found on the Adelaide Metro ANZAC Day webpage
Every effort is made so that all timetabled bus substitute services are accessible for all customers, including the elderly, customers with a disability and those travelling with prams.
If customers find their large mobility device does not fit on an Adelaide Metro bus, it is recommended they contact the Torrens Transit Mile End depot on 8292 8113 to request an accessible taxi. This service is available from train station to train station only and not a door-to-door service.
Bicycles are not permitted on substitute bus services.
