 Glenelg Tram Overpass

Glenelg tram overpass.

Project overviewarrow
Construction of the Overpass began in June 2009 and is expected to be completed early 2010.

Getting to and from the overpassarrow

> Indented bus bays will be located adjacent to the overpass.

The platform can be accessed via lifts and stairs either side of South Road.

Tramway Park
shared use bicycle and pedestrian patharrow

A shared pedestrian and bicycle path over South Road will be delivered as part of this project and will be accessible from the surrounding street network and feature appropriate signs, crossings and barriers to avoid any risk of danger for users.

 Glenelg tram overpass.

The bridge structurearrow

> There will be 220 metres of reinforced earth walls on the approaches to the bridge. A subtle relief patterning in the concrete will give the walls an organic texture.

An urban pedestrian plaza will be created at ground level on the Eastern and Western sides of South Road.

It will be available for public use at all times of the day and night, will greatly improve pedestrian linkages within the local area and feature;

  • high quality paving,
  • seating,
  • strips of ornamental and predominantly shade tolerant low plantings.

Councils and the State Government are working together to develop a range of ideas for the space between the pedestrian plaza areas and bridge end walls.

This area will be surfaced with paths connecting to adjacent roads. The resultant space will provide a substantial publically accessible area that could be used a number of different ways.

We would be keen to hear your views on how this space could be used.

You can view our preliminary ideas at the Community Open Day and give us your feedback.

 Anti-throw screensarrow

Security throw screens will be subtly patterned with a supergraphic interpreting the patterning of bark on the spotted gums nearby.

Platform (Tram Stop No. 6)arrow

The platform above South Road will consist of:

> A shelter and seating similar to the CBD stops extending the entire length of the platform.

Tinted glazing on the shelter which is provided in a random checker pattern relevant to the Black Forest area.

Platform (tram Stop No. 6)

Water sensitive landscapingarrow

The focus of the landscaping is on plants that are endemic, indigenous and have low water use.

Tree plantings provide a strong upper canopy structure to the overpass including:

> Spotted Gum (Corymbia maculata) lining the tramway

> Combination of Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus) and Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) will be planted along local streets

Capture and reuse of storm waterarrow

 > Water will be captured from the platform canopy and drained to harvesting tanks on both sides of South Road, located behind the precast walls enclosing spans 1-2 (west of platform) and 7-8 (east of platform).

> The water is reused to irrigate ornamental garden areas around the ground plaza.

Other garden areas are designed using hardy low water use endemic, indigenous plantings.

Storm water runoff from the surrounding streets, new car parking area and pedestrian paved surfaces will be directed into the gardens.
