Free Wi-Fi hotspots trial commences

When: From Monday 29 October 2012

Commencing on Monday 29 October, the roll out of the trial offering free Wi-Fi hotspot access for public transport customers will commence with the first bus from the Mile End depot, this bus will operate on any of the routes run from the Mile End depot.

The trial will continue to roll out offering free Wi-Fi on 20 buses and all trams, installation is expected to be completed by Mid January 2013.  The first tram with Wi-Fi will commence early in November.

This will give customers free internet access via their mobile handheld devices whilst riding on the trial trams and buses. The service is sponsored by advertisers on the Adelaide Metro fleet and APN the company contracted by Government to sell and manage advertising on the bus and tram fleet.  

APN have applied this technology on Yarra Trams for nearly 2 years and over the past year on a similar trial on Brisbane buses operated by the Brisbane City Council. The download speed may vary from area to area and the amount of users connected to the network at any given time, but the download speeds on the 3G Dual WAN modem, is 1.7 megabits per second.
